Letterboxing at Moonbeams Nature Preserve:
An educational, fun – and free- outdoor adventure activity!

If you haven’t tried letterboxing yet, here is your chance!  Visit Moonbeams Preserve, the Orange County Land Trust’s 150-acre nature preserve at the base of the Shawangunk Ridge, for a self-guided visit, and experience this fast growing hobby that is getting more Americans outdoors and into nature!

LETTERBOXING is an ideal family activity for people of all ages requiring only a passport style notebook, a rubber stamp of your choice, and enthusiasm for an outdoor treasure hunt.  With a printed copy of “Walking on the Moon 1” Orange County Land Trust’s new letterboxing quest (available at www.atlasquest.com) participants follow clues that lead them through the preserve, stopping at points along the trail that highlight a variety of the preserve’s natural characteristics and wildlife habitat. The quest ends at the site of our hidden letterbox.  Inside the letterbox are a notebook, ink pad and handcrafted stamp unique to Moonbeams Preserve. Participants stamp the OCLT notebook with their individual stamp, and stamp their own notebook with the Moonbeams stamp.

Letterboxing quests have been placed by individuals and organizations at natural areas, parks and historic sites across the country! People who enjoy letterboxing often have notebooks full of stamps they’ve collected during their travels, as well as memories of a day spent outdoors with friends and family!

Moonbeams Preserve is an ideal location for the Land Trust’s first letterboxing quest where people can learn more about Orange County’s ecologically important natural areas and rich agricultural history.  As the preserve is open to the public every day, free of charge, this letterboxing quest will remain at the site, available for self guided visits anytime.

For more information on letterboxing, and to view other letterboxing quests in our area as well as across the U.S., visit www.atlasquest.com. Directions to the preserve are at www.oclt.org/mmoonbeam.htm

Have fun letterboxing! Leave us a note in the letterbox and let us know how you enjoyed the trail!
